Dodo, a national symbol of Mauritius. The Dutch colonists in 17th century discovered the Dodo, this unique bird which lived then on the island of Mauritius. This bird was as big as a turkey with a hooked yellow beak. The poor creature, endowed with short wings, was unable to fly. When the Dutch colonists on their way to India, discovered the ease of hunting it down, the fate of the bird was sealed: roasted to extinction!
In addition, the Dutch introduced on the island cats, dogs, goats and pigs which
also became dangerous predators for Dodo. Rats, who were also introduced to the island as clandestine travellers in the hold of the colonial ships, were big fans of Dodo’s eggs. Obviously under this circumstances Dodo could not survive and disappeared completely.
Dodo vanished more then three hundred years ago but it continues to live in the hearts of Mauritians, reaching the pinnacle of eternity.
